Australian Idol star Paulini sentenced over driver’s licence fraud

Four months after she was charged for bribing a Roads and Maritime Services employee in exchange for a fake, unrestricted driver’s licence, Paulini Curuenavuli has just been handed down her sentence at Mount Druitt Local Court.

The former Australian Idol star has avoided jail over the charge of “corruptly giving a benefit for an agent” (which carries a maximum sentence of seven years behind bars). Instead she has been given a six-month suspended sentence and placed on a good behaviour bond.

In a letter to the courts, Barrister Lisa-Claire Hutchison said Paulini apologised for her actions, which saw her pay an RMS official $850 for the fake licence.

“[She] has reflected in her personal letter – on the extent to which her letting her fans down, in particular, her younger fans, has weighed upon her.”

Hutchison also noted the financial loss experienced by the Bodyguard star as a result of the negative publicity surrounding the incident.

“With increased publicity comes an increased measure of public shaming,” the lawyer explained. “She has acknowledged the utterly unacceptable nature of her behaviour ... she is deeply contrite for the actions which she perpetrated.”

Former Australian Idol star facing up to 15 years in jail

Pop star and winner of the 2005 series of Australian Idol, Kate DeAraugo, is facing up to 15 years in jail on drugs and weapons charges.

The 31-year-old, who was also a member of the pop group the Young Divas, was allegedly caught twice in the space of five days in June with “a trafficable quantity of the drug [ice], a large knife and a tomahawk”. It is believed DeAraugo was also found to be driving under the influence of drugs.

Family and friends of the star are said to be shocked over the charges – especially music manager Tony Southwell. “It’s very, very sad because she’s a beautiful young woman with an incredible gift,” he told New Idea. “She’s had a really tough time, but I thought she was over all that stuff. This is awful.”

Southwell, who booked DeAraugo as a backup singer for a 20-show run with the James Southwell Band through January and February, was especially shocked given the star’s exemplary behaviour and professionalism.

“She was never late for a rehearsal or a show, and conducted herself in the most professional manner,” he said. “We brought her in to sing, and that’s what she did, incredibly. There were no issues at all, no sign of drugs or alcohol or anything.”

DeAraugo is set to appear in court on October 4 and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The allegations make the star the second member of the Young Divas to face legal troubles in recent months. Just weeks ago, it emerged that fellow Australian Idol star Paulini Curuenavuli was being charged with bribery, after she allegedly gave an NSW Roads and Maritime Services employee $800 in exchange for a fake, unrestricted driver’s license – despite not being qualified to drive.
